３章
3:1 愛せられる人たちよ。わたしは今この第二の手紙をあなたがたに書いています。（わたしは、これらの手紙によって記憶を呼び起し、あなたがたの純真な心を奮い立たせようとしたのです。）
3:2
それは、あなたがたが聖なる預言者たちによって以前語られた言葉と、わたしたち使徒が伝えた、主であり、また救主であるかたの戒めとを思い出させるためです。
3:3
第一に、このことを知っていて下さい。終りの日々あざける者たちが、あざけりながら出てきて自分の欲情のままに生活します。
3:4
また、こう言っています、「主の来臨の約束はどこにあるのか？先祖たちが眠りについて以来、すべてのものはそれがあるままであって、天地創造の初めから変ってはいないではないか？」と。
3:5
彼らはこのことを故意に忘れています。すなわち、神の言によって、昔からもろもろの天が存在し、地は水がもとになり、また、水によって存在したのですが、
3:6
このために、その時の世界は、御言により水に浸されて滅んでしまいました。
3:7
しかし、今あるもろもろの天と地とは、同じ御言によって保存され、火で焼かれるために、不敬虔な人々の裁きと、彼らの永遠の滅びの日まで保たれているのです。
3:8
しかし、愛せられる人々よ。この一つの事、すなわち、主にあっては、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようである事を忘れてはいけません。
3:9
主はある人々が緩慢だと思っているように、その約束の実行を遅らせておられるのではありません。ただ、わたしたちのために忍耐して、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔改めに至ることを望んでおられるのです。
3:10
しかし、主の日は盗人が夜来るように襲って来ます。その時は、天は大音響をたてて消え去り、すべての要素は猛烈な熱によって溶けてしまいます。地とそこにあるもろもろのわざは、みな焼きつくされてしまうのです。
3:11
このように、これらはみな溶けさってしまうのですから、あなたがたすべての人は、神の日の到来を熱心に待ち望みながら、
3:12
極力、きよく敬虔な信心深い行いをしていなければなりません。その時には、天は燃えくずれ、もろもろの要素は猛烈な熱と共に溶解してしまうのですから。
3:13
しかし、わたしたちは、彼の約束に従って、義人たちが住むことになる、新しい天と新しい地とを待ち望んでいます。
3:14
それですから、愛せられる人々よ。この事を知っているのですから、平安のうちに神のみまえに出られるように、しみや責められるところがないように励みなさい。
3:15
また、わたしたちの主の忍耐は救であることを考えなさい。このことは、愛せられるわたしたちの兄弟パウロが、彼に与えられた知恵によって、あなたがたに書きおくったとおりです。
3:16
彼は、すべての手紙にこれらのことを述べています。その手紙の中には、いくつか理解しにくい箇所もあって、無学で心の定まらない者たちは、聖書の他のところについてもしているように、ねじ曲げて、自分たち自身に滅亡を招いています。
3:17
あなたがた愛せられる人々よ、あなたがたはこの事をあらかじめ知っているのですから、悪しき者の誤りに導かれてあなたがた自身の確信を失うことのないように注意していなさい。
3:18
そして、わたしたちの主また救主イエス・キリストの恵みと知識とにおいて、ますます成長しなさい。今も、また永遠の日に至るまでも、栄光が彼にあるように、アァメン。
3:1 Beloved, I now write this second
letter to you, in which I stir up your pure mind by reminder
3:2
to remember the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and
of the commandment of the Lord and Savior by us, the apostles.
3:3
First, knowing this, that there will come in the last days
scoffers walking according to their own lusts
3:4
and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the
fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning
of creation.
3:5 For this is hidden from them by their
willing it, that the heavens were of old, and the earth out of the water, and
through water, being held together by the Word of God,
3:6
through which the world that then was, being flooded by water, perished.
3:7
But the present heavens and the earth being kept in store by the same
Word, are being kept for fire until the day of judgment and destruction of
ungodly men.
3:8
But, beloved, let not this one thing be hidden from you, that one
day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as
one day.
3:9
The Lord is not slow concerning His promise, as some count slowness, but
is long-suffering toward us, not purposing that any should perish, but that all
should come to repentance.
3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief
in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise,
and the elements will melt with fervent heat. And the earth and the
works in it will be burned up.
3:11 Then, all these things being about to be
dissolved, what sort ought you to be in holy behavior and godliness,
3:12 looking for and rushing the coming of the Day
of God, on account of which the heavens, being on fire, will melt away,
and the elements will melt, burning with heat?
3:13 But according to His promise, we look for new
heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
3:14 Therefore, beloved, looking for these things,
be diligent, spotless, and without blemish, to be found by Him in peace.
3:15 And think of the long-suffering of our Lord as
salvation (as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the
wisdom given to him
3:16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them
of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which the
unlearned and unstable pervert, as also they do the rest of the
Scriptures, to their own destruction).
3:17 Therefore, beloved, knowing beforehand,
beware lest being led away with the error of the lawless, you fall from your
own steadfastness.
3:18 But grow in grace and in knowledge of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the
day of eternity. Amen.
